Senator Corker participated in a news conference on Thursday with senators from both parties who are encouraging the deficit reduction “super committee” to exceed its mandate and achieve at least $4 trillion in savings.
“Dealing with the longer-term issues is the very best thing we can do to stimulate the economy for the short term,” Corker said.
Corker continues to call for:
• peeling back unnecessary federal regulations that are hurting job creation
• embracing tax reform that eliminates loopholes, permanently lowering individual and corporate rates and broadening the base
• addressing reform of Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid in a meaningful way that ensures solvency
• passing a longer-term highway bill
• passing free but fair trade agreements that expand markets for American products
• growing all forms of domestic energy production

In honor of the 224th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution, students in 11 Tennessee schools will participate in Constitution events sponsored by Senator’s Corker’s office during National Constitution Week, September 16–23.
“I still marvel at the wisdom of our Founding Fathers in being able to create such an elegant document that has provided the foundation for our government and our country for over 200 years, and I hope the children who attend our Constitution Week events across the state are able to come away with a little of that wonder as well,” said Corker.
Corker is a cosponsor of S.1319, the Enumerated Powers Act, legislation that would require each act of Congress to contain statements explaining the constitutional authority sustaining each provision of that act.

Avoiding Nation-Building in Libya
Senator Corker responded to news that top NATO military officers are reportedly expressing a desire to end the NATO-led operation in Libya as soon as possible and avoid a long-term nation-building and policing effort now that Moammar Gadhafi is out of power.
“When the administration involved the U.S. in Libya, we were told the mission would be limited to protecting civilians and would last a matter of days, not weeks. Now, five months later, the Libyan opposition has removed the Qadhafi regime from power, and it’s time to wind down the operation as soon as possible. NATO should not be engaged in another nation-building operation that could entrench the alliance for years to come,” Corker said.
