Embracing Free Enterprise is Key to Economic Growth

May 30, 2012 - Sen. Corker is briefed by one of the teams participating in Chattanooga’s Gig Tank business accelerator competition.

In response to today’s disappointing jobs report, Senator Corker stressed the need for pro-growth tax reform combined with a plan to reduce the deficit and restore solvency to Medicare and Social Security.

“I’m convinced that the best thing we could do as a country to get past self-doubt and really cause our economy to take off is to focus on pro-growth tax reform that eliminates loopholes and lowers rates combined with a long-term plan to reduce the deficit and restore solvency to Medicare and Social Security. Our first best chance to do that is at the end of the year, and I continue to be hopeful that Congress will take advantage of the opportunity,” Corker said.

In a series of events across Tennessee this week, Senator Corker promoted entrepreneurship and shared his perspective on our country’s fiscal challenges and the importance of embracing the free enterprise system that has made our country great.

He visited with participants in the Gig Tank business accelerator competition on Wednesday morning in Chattanooga.  Eight teams of entrepreneurs vying for start-up capital are using Chattanooga’s 1 Gigabit-per-second Internet connection to generate the best new business ideas.

“There’s nothing more energizing than being around young people trying to start companies,” Senator Corker said.  “The publicity, the awareness that Chattanooga is a place that's friendly to talented entrepreneurs, you never know what opportunities that will create down the road…I think the best is yet to come.”

In the News
“U.S. Sen. Bob Corker said he is optimistic that Democrats and Republicans in Congress will be able to come together to solve some of the nation's fiscal problems. He said that is something that must be done if the United States is to prosper in the world economy.  ‘We need to deal with our own fiscal issues and get them off the table,’ Corker told the Jackson Sun Editorial Board on Thursday. ‘I'm more optimistic than ever ... I'm optimistic over the next 24 months we're going to do something great for the nation, and I want to be a part of that.’  Corker said that although Congress has been in a sustained gridlock on many fronts, he sees evidence that there is some consensus building among Democrats and Republicans around the issues of pro growth tax reform and entitlement reform.  Consensus could set the stage for some meaningful changes that will spur the economy and reduce the national debt…” Read more…
